Naturally Beautiful Soapstone Art
Dan knew from an early age he was an artist. His kindergarten teacher noted his skill. Some 20 years later as a stock car driver Dan was drawing and painting when he wasn’t driving. The tools of a mechanic and tools of the artist were handled with the same skill but, when renowned soap stone art carver Ben Henry noted his friend’s artist skill, he posed the question; would Dan want to carve soapstone sculptures? Truth be told, Ben thought he might be trading an apprenticeship in carving for a driver that would drive exclusively for him. Stock car racing behind him and johdan stone art sculptures, carvings ahead, Ben Henry has proven himself a worthy mentor with a very able student.
Dan spent more and more time at the Six Nations Reserve honing his skills. It wasn’t long before he became a carver full time and his pieces have evolved into truly Johdan works of art. Johdan stone art soapstone sculptures, carvings show great respect for nature, bears (including dancing bears) and eagles are the main focus of Dan’s work but he has researched and brought to life ; turtles, snakes and bullfrogs to name a few. He takes a great deal of pleasure in restorations and teaching students to carve in soapstone, there are no rules, only the release of young minds into the creative world. Dan is truly passing on his legacy and creating joy as he goes.
